One of best things you can do to use your time efficiently, is to figure out what not to do. Stop doing things you don't have the time or ambition to do. So after much thought, I decided to stop writing my own blog software and just use an existing blogging service. I have had a lot of fun developing the tools that create this site. I started with Perl. Ported most of it to Ruby and used Ant as the XSLT engine for both. I started on PHP port, but things have changed. Other tools like Google Docs have come along that removes the reasons I started on the software to begin with.
So this is the last blog post on this site. All new posts can be found at: http://blueskyworkshop.blogspot.com/. New content can be found at: http://www.blueskyworkshop.com.
I have no plans to get rid of this site anytime soon. But will be moving all the howtos and such over to the new site eventually. All new content will be on the new blog and the web site. And here are some more links just in case.
Hopefully this will give me a little more time to learn some new things and have a little more time to write about them.
Since I first time since I subscribed to Wired magazine back in the early nineties, I'm considering not renewing my subscription. Wired was the magazine of the Internet generation. If it was hip, or cool, or new, they would have a story before anyone else. A voice for freedom of speech and thought on the Net.
Of late they seem to have lost their edge. There seems to be more and more stories about media, hollywood, and the like and less and less on tech. More stories on the rich and powerful, and less on those who may be the leaders of the future.
Maybe its just me. But it feels like they are losing their libertarian ideals and just becoming another mainstream rag. Well I'm not ready to pull the plug yet. But I sure hope it doesn't morph into the tech version of People.
Well after finally tiring of having to spell "Abbey" for people :), I've decided to make a change. I've registered Blue Sky Workshop as my new domain name and I've begun work on setting up the new site. I have found a good PHP Wiki I can use as a CMS and which I can integrate with my blogging software.
I'm also in the process of porting my blogging software over to PHP. Ruby is great, but the XSLT support is just not there. With PHP I can deliver a complete solution.
More news to come as I get things going.
After the price drop this week, I could not resist any longer and picked up an iPhone. This has got to be one of the best enigneered products ever.
The thing I'm finding interesting is the lack of simplified pages for mobile devices. I know the iPhone can read normal web pages and all that. But the page load times can be ridiculously slow even when on wifi. My guess is its all those flash adds and such timing out.
Anyway, I have found some sites, like the BBC for instance, that have low graphics versions or actual mobile versions. I will try to post on what I find.
It will be interesting to see if some of the big media companies actually start adpating their sites for smaller devices that are a little less than a laptop and a lot more than a phone.
